Aim
Increasing numbers of children with complex needs are being implanted. This raises issues about how to evaluate them, both before and after implantation, and what outcomes may be looked for. A number of papers report benefits in this group, and anecdotal evidence from families reveals that important outcomes for them may not be shown through traditional outcome measures of speech perception and production and that there may be differing, worthwhile goals. The Champions evaluation scales will be helpful here.Booklet
The booklet brings together the collective experience of experts in the field of both cochlear implantation and children with complex needs. It highlights current knowledge, points to sources of further information and aims to support parents and those working with children, whether in implant teams or not, in giving cochlear implantation full consideration. It also provides Champions Evaluation Profiles to assess these complex children.
