Advanced Bionics' Response to the NICE Final Appraisal Determination

Advanced Bionics shares the delight at the positive outcome of the National Institute for
Health and Clinical Excellence’s appraisal, whereby it recommends cochlear
implantation as a therapy for severe to profound deafness in children and adults.
The long process that started at the end of 2006, experienced a unique and highly
professional response from all stakeholders and users’ associations alike, who
constantly strive to assure what is already an extraordinary quality-based delivery of this
therapy in the United Kingdom.
NICE have defined that unilateral cochlear implantation represents a cost-effective
option for all people with severe to profound deafness, who do not receive adequate
benefit from acoustic hearing aids. Simultaneous bilateral cochlear implantation is
recommended for children and those adults who are blind or have other disabilities that
increase their reliance on auditory stimuli.

Advanced Bionics have addressed the NICE appraisal, from the very start, adopting a
responsible and CI user focused approach and the company is committed to continuing
to develop new ways to support clinicians, users and families in their daily management
of cochlear implants.
In the coming months, Advanced Bionics will invest even more resources to ensure that
the positive changes initiated by the NICE decision will be properly addressed within our
information material, products, trainings and importantly, the lifetime support of our
family of AB users.
