In the early 1980's, researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) were among the first to develop a multichannel cochlear implant (only single or mono-channel cochlear implants were available at the time), and reported that these devices provided useful hearing to their recipients. The success of the UCSF device led Dr. Robert Schindler, M.D., head of UCSF's cochlear implant program, to seek a partner that could provide engineering talent and financial resources to commercialise this remarkable multichannel implant system. To accomplish these goals, Dr. Schindler approached Alfred E. Mann a world-renowned innovator and entrepreneur in the field of medical technology. In 1993, Advanced Bionics® - previously a sub-division of Pacesetter Systems, Inc.- was set up as an independent company to manufacture and distribute its first product, the CLARION® Multi-Strategy Cochlear Implant. Today Advanced Bionics® employs over 350 employees world-wide and applies the same spirit of innovation to also treat other disabilities with other advanced biotechnology devices.
