health surgeon.jpgThe purpose of the surgical procedure
is to implant the
internal components of the system, consisting of the electrode array and the implant electronics. The hermetically sealed electronics are placed under the skin and behind the ear on the mastoid bone while the electrode array is inserted into the cochlea.

Immediately before surgery, a small area behind and above the ear to be implanted is likely to be shaved. The hair grows back naturally following the operation.

The surgery takes about 2-3 hours and carries the same basic risks as any surgery involving general anaesthesia.

Usually you will be able to get out of bed and walk around the day after your operation and may be discharged from the hospital a few days later. The sutures will be removed about a week after surgery.
